David Thomas

Posted by Thurston in

David Lynn Thomas (born 1953 in Miami, Florida) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician.

He was one of the founding members of the short-lived protopunkers Rocket From The Tombs (1974-1975), where he went by the name of Crocus Behemoth, and of post-punk group Pere Ubu (1975 - present, intermittently). He has also released several solo albums. Though primarily a singer, he sometimes plays melodeon, trombone, guitar or other instruments.

Thomas has described his artistic focus as being the "gestalt of culture, geography and sound". [1] Common themes crop up throughout much of his work, such as the US Interstate Highway system, images of roadside or "junk" tourist culture, Brian Wilson, AM Radio, and many others.

Something of a cult figure, Thomas's high pitched voice is one of the most distinctive in rock music; Emerson Dameron memorably described Thomas's singing as "Jimmy Stewart trapped in an oboe"[2], while Greil Marcus writes that "Mr Thomas's voice is that of a man muttering in a crowd. You think he's talking to himself until you realize he's talking to you."

Scritti Politti

Posted by Thurston in ,

Scritti Politti are a Welsh musical group.

Formed in 1978 in Leeds, England, Scritti Politti is primarily a musical vehicle for singer-songwriter Green Gartside (real name Paul Julian Strohmeyer) (b 22 June 1955, Cardiff, Wales).

Initially a left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid-1980s, enjoying significant success in the music charts in the UK and US. The band's music was characterized by sophisticated studio production and Green Gartside's sly, punning wordplay influenced by his reading of deconstruction (the group's 1982 debut album, Songs to Remember, features a song called "Jacques Derrida").

The group's most successful album, 1985's Cupid & Psyche 85, was innovative in its early use of the techniques of sampling and MIDI sequencing and produced hit singles including "Perfect Way", "The Word Girl", "Wood Beez" and "Absolute". Following this period of fame, Gartside became disillusioned with the music industry and retired to the South Wales of his childhood for nearly a decade. He returned to music-making in the late 1990s, releasing two critically acclaimed albums in 1999 and 2006.

Like many Welsh singers, Gartside is known for his distinctive vocal style — in this case, an effeminate, archly cooing falsetto-tenor; he was described by one critic as having "a voice that's eternally 14 years old"

Art of Noise

Posted by Thurston in , ,

Art of Noise was an avant-garde synthpop group formed in 1983 by producer Trevor Horn, music journalist Paul Morley, and session musicians/studio hands Anne Dudley, J. J. Jeczalik, and Gary Langan. The group's mostly instrumental compositions were novel and often clever melodic sound collages based on digital sampler technology, which was new at the time. Inspired by turn-of-the-century revolutions in music, the Art of Noise was initially packaged as a faceless anti- or non-group, blurring the distinction between the art and its creators. The band is noted for their innovative use of electronics and computers in pop music and particularly for innovative use of sampling. The name of the group alludes to the essay The Art of Noises by noted futurist Luigi Russolo.

From the earliest releases on ZTT, the band referred to themselves as both Art of Noise and The Art of Noise. The version with the article "the" was often preferred by third parties. To add to the confusion both official and unofficial releases and press material from the same releases use both versions, but Art of Noise is preferred.

Stan Ridgway

Posted by Thurston in , ,

Stan Ridgway born April 5, 1954 in Barstow, California, is a Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter, and was the original lead singer of the band Wall of Voodoo.

The band was named Wall of Voodoo by Ridgway before their first gig in reference to a comment made by Joe Berardi, a friend of Ridgway's, while recording and overdubbing a Kalamazoo Rhythm Ace drum machine, a gift to Ridgway by writer and iconic voice over artist Daws Butler, partner to Stan Freberg, voice of Yogi Bear and many other Hanna-Barbera characters. Berardi was listening to some of the Acme Soundtracks music Ridgway and Moreland had created in their studio. When Ridgway jokingly compared the multiple-drum-machine- and Farfisa-organ-laden recordings to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Berardi commented it sounded more like a "wall of voodoo", and the name stuck.

Actually, for new listeners, the voodoo reference was a little misleading, as it referred to the music's often spooky quality, as opposed to any Haitian or Caribbean influences. In fact, Ridgway's Wov music could fairly have been described as a cross between early synthesizer pop (especially that of Devo) and Ennio Morricone's soundtracks for Sergio Leone's "Man with No Name" films. Adding to the music's distinctiveness was Nanini's percussive experimentation, mixing drum machines with unconventional found instruments such as pots, pans and various kitchen utensils, as well as Marc Moreland's twangy spaghetti-western guitar. On top of the mix was Ridgway's unusual vocal style — a flat, uninflected, nasal Western drawl that combined the stoic ballad-style Sprechgesang of Johnny Cash, the declamatory theatrical delivery of Ethel Merman, and the ironic, clenched-jaw voice of a wisecracking ventriloquist's dummy doing James Cagney impressions and carny routines. One of Ridgway's hobbies since childhood is ventriloquism and he occasionally assumes the persona of a dummy named Jackie "Teak" Lazar, such as in his cover version of "Behind Closed Doors" from Holiday in Dirt and in the video for "Big Dumb Town" from Black Diamond.

Ministry

Posted by Thurston in ,

Ministry is an influential, Grammy-nominated American industrial metal band founded by frontman Al Jourgensen in 1981. Al Jourgensen began Ministry in Chicago, Illinois in 1981. His first band prior to Ministry was Special Affect with Groovie Mann (of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult). The original line-up of Ministry consisted mainly of Jourgensen (vocals and keyboards) and Stephen George (drums), and Ministry's original sound was essentially New Wave synth-pop that was more melodic than the aggressive music for which Jourgensen would become known. In the incarnation of Jourgensen/George, Ministry created four 12" singles on Wax Trax! Records through 1984 (anthologized on Twelve Inch Singles). Their first LP, With Sympathy, was issued on Arista Records in 1983, and sold slowly but hit the upper 90's in the Billboard Top 100. The music in With Sympathy, and the various singles that Arista issued in association with it, was melodic pop; critic Dean Carlson describes the album as "Human League's surly little brother."[1] Jourgensen has always expressed disappointment with Ministry's music during those early years, reportedly referring to With Sympathy as an "abortion of an album." According to him, after signing the record contract, all artistic control of Ministry was "handed" over to other writers and producers. [2] Some of his preferred recordings from that era were collected into the CD Early Trax (Rykodisc Records, 2004).

Mission of Burma

Posted by Thurston in ,

Like many of their post-punk and no wave contemporaries, Mission of Burma's efforts are largely concerned with extending punk's original vocabulary without losing its essential rebellious spirit. What makes Burma's approach so distinct is their formal musical training and grounding in modern classical music (Miller had formally studied piano, tuba and composition in college) and to a lesser extent their faith in the sound of late 1960s and early 1970s proto-punk pioneers the MC5 and the Stooges, both from Michigan, Miller's and Swope's home state.

Using rapid shifts in dynamics, unconventional time signatures and chord progressions along with tape effects, Mission of Burma challenges the prevailing idioms of punk while attempting to retain its power and immediacy. On a purely intellectual level, Burma's approach is similar to that of Glenn Branca (another early Burma contemporary) and later Branca disciples Sonic Youth.

While in early years Burma's audience was limited, with all their recordings released on the small Boston-based record label Ace of Hearts, today Mission of Burma is widely acknowledged as one of the first groups to achieve the potential of modern alternative/independent rock, fusing punk and experimental music into some of the most influential music to come out of the American punk/new wave scene.

Craig Leon

Posted by Thurston in

Craig grew up in Florida, where he received private classical music training in keyboard performance, composition, and musicology. While working in local bands and on local rock and R&B records as a keyboard player and arranger he recorded in various studios including Criteria in Miami. He eventually built his own recording studio with the help of his friend, Alex Sadkin, another Floridian who also worked at Criteria at that time. After producer, Richard Gottehrer brought in Sire recording artists, The Climax Blues Band, in to record at the studio he offered Craig an appointment in New York as his assistant.

As a result, Leon moved to Manhattan in the early 1970s where he accepted an A&R position at Sire Records in New York under Gottehrer and his partner Seymour Stein. There he was responsible for the discovery and early development of the Ramones and Talking Heads amongst other artists. He produced the first Ramones album and also concentrated on licensing more adventurous European records which the majors were unwilling to release in the U.S. At Sire, Craig learned the skills necessary for the production, as well as manufacture of recorded music.

After producing the 'Live at CBGBs' compilation for Atlantic Records, Craig joined Richard Gottehrer and Marty Thau to set up a production company called Instant Records. Projects included the early Blondie records, Richard Hell & The Voidoids and Suicide.

Was (Not Was)

Posted by Thurston in ,

Was (Not Was) is an eccentric pop group founded by David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) and Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) popular throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

Weiss and Fagenson were childhood friends who grew up together in suburban Detroit. Partly due to Fagenson's poverty they decided to form Was (Not Was) in 1979. The name of the band was derived from Fagenson's son, who enjoyed contradicting words such as 'Blue' with 'Not Blue'. Their first recording was "Wheel Me Out", a 12-inch dance record for the avant-garde Ze Records.

Their first album Was (Not Was) (1981) was an amalgam of rock, disco, Weiss's beat poetry, Reagan-era commentary and jazz. On vocals they recruited Harry Bowens and "Sweet Pea" Atkinson, who proved to be distinctive, very soulful front-men, who frequently found themselves singing absurd, surreal songs alongside tender ballads. The MC5's Wayne Kramer (guitar) and The Knack's Doug Feiger (vocal) were guest players.

Madness

Posted by Thurston in , ,

Madness are a British pop/ska band from Camden Town, London, that formed in 1976.[2] As of 2007, the band has continued to perform with their most recognised lineup of seven members, although their lineup has varied slightly over the years. They were one of the most prominent bands of the late-1970s 2 Tone ska revival.[3] However, as their career progressed, the band has moved away from ska and closer towards more conventional pop music.[3]

Madness achieved most of their success in the 1980s. Both Madness and UB40 spent exactly 214 weeks on the UK singles charts over the course of the decade. The bands therefore hold the record for most weeks spent by a group in the 1980s UK singles charts.

Virgin Prunes

Posted by Thurston in ,

The Virgin Prunes was an Irish gothic rock band. The band formed in 1977 and disbanded in 1986 after the departure of member Gavin Friday. The rest of the band continued on without him for a while as The Prunes, but they too ended activities by 1990.

Career

The band consisted of childhood friends of U2's Bono and The Edge. Lypton Village was a "youthful gang" created by Bono, Guggi (Derek Rowan) and Gavin Friday (Fionan Hanvey) in the early 70s, where every member got a new identity and where they could escape from dreary and predictable Dublin life and be anything they wanted to be. It was both lead singers Friday and Guggi who first gave a teenaged Paul Hewson his alter-ego and world-famous moniker "Bono Vox of O'Connell Street," later simply "Bono." Known for its outrageous and controversial stage performances, led by the bands' theatrical singer/songwriter Friday, they first began playing small shows in Dublin gaining them a cult audience and ridicule from the culturally conservative community.

Friday and Guggi, along with third vocalist 'Dave-iD Busaras' (David Scott Watson), guitarist Dik Evans (brother of U2's The Edge), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowan, brother of Guggi) and drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy), completed the original lineup.

Pod left the group and was replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii (aka Bintii, aka Princess Tinymeat, né Daniel Figgis). With Binttii now on drums, tape loops and keyboards, the band secured a deal with Rough Trade Records. They released their first single "Twenty Tens (I've Been Smoking All Night)", through Rough Trade but on their own Baby Records label in late 1980. They released a second single "In The Greylight" in early 1981.

Two other Binttii tracks were released during 1980 before conflicts with other members forced him out of the band. "Red Nettle'" was included on an NME compilation "C81" and "Third Secret" was included on the Cherry Red compilation "Perspectives And Distortion". Work had already started on the project "A New Form Of Beauty" while Bintti was with the band, but after he was replaced by Mary D'Nellon (Drums), some of his tracks were re-recorded and his name was not included in the credits.

"A New Form of Beauty" was a project that originally contained four chapters and was released in various formats - 7" single, 10" single and 12" single. There was also supposed to be a cassette but this fourth part was never officially released, although all four parts did appear on an Italian version of "A New Form Of Beauty" which was released as a double album.

In November 1982, the Virgin Prunes release their debut album '...If I Die, I Die' (produced by Colin Newman of Wire) and "Heresie", a French boxset. "Heresie" was commissioned by Yann Farcy after seeing them perform at the Rex Club in Paris and was based on a loose examination of insanity.

In 1984 both Guggi and Dik Evans, unhappy with the music business, left the band. This forced drummer Mary D'Nellon to take up the guitar and allowed Pod to return as the band's drummer. The Virgin Prunes started to record the album Sons Find Devils, which has never been released.

In 1985, confusingly enough, a retrospective video titled Sons Find Devils was released; this video had nothing to do with the unreleased album of the same name. During May 1985, Over the Rainbow, a compilation of rarities, was also released.

In July 1986 the band, now a four-piece recording music written for 'Sons Find Devils', finally released a new album, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed. Also that year frontman Gavin Friday left the group. His departure was confirmed in the liner notes of the band's 1987 live album The Hidden Lie which contained a short statement confirming the band's break-up.

After disbanding as The Virgin Prunes, D'Nellon, Strongman and Busaras formed an offshoot group called The Prunes, which released three albums between 1988 and 1990 (Lite Fantastik, 1988; Nada, 1989; and Blossoms & Blood, 1990). Dik Evans played on The Prunes' album Lite Fantastik and a seventeen year old, Justin Kavanagh (a.k.a. Valley Limberg) took the helm as guitarist for "Blossoms & Blood".

Note: Guggi and Strongman's youngest brother Peter Rowan (nicknamed 'Radar') was the little boy whose image has appeared on countless U2 albums and single sleeves over the years, most notably 'Boy', 'War' and 'Best of 1980-1990'. Peter is now an acclaimed professional photographer in Dublin, recently utilizing the new spelling 'Rowen' for his surname in order to avoid confusion with the American bluegrass musician Peter Rowan.

Binttii's youngest brother Jonathan Figgis is the boy who appears on the cover of the second Virgin Prunes single 'In The Greylight'. Jonathan now runs the award-winning film production company October Eleven Pictures with his other brother Jason Figgis

In 1998, Cleopatra Records re-released the Sons Find Devils video, along with a soundtrack album on CD. This was the first commercially-available Virgin Prunes material to be released since 1993 and, for a few years, the only commercially available full-length Virgin Prunes album on compact disc (though studio recordings of the songs "Baby Turns Blue," "Pagan Lovesong," and "Caucasian Walk" had cropped up on CD compilations of various Goth and other dark/avant-garde post-punk bands).

Gavin Friday has since had a reasonably successful solo career in both music and film. Guggi remains an influential artist in Dublin. Dave-id still records as a solo artist in Ireland. After 20 years of self-imposed seclusion from the rock world, Dik Evans recently gave an overview of his and brother Edge's early years in U2 for the December 2005 issue of 'Word Magazine'. Trevor, Mary and Anthony Murphy live quietly throughout Europe.

As of 2004, Daniel Figgis is currently composer in residence with Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown, Dublin. His most recent composition, Post Production, was performed at the Winter Garden, New York City, in December of 2006.

After much talk, years of anticipation from fans, and with much input from the band, The Virgin Prunes' discography was remastered and reissued on Mute Records, which included ...If I Die, I Die, the Moon Looked Down and Laughed, Over the Rainbow, Heresie and an album of selections from the A New Form of Beauty series.

In 2006 Dave ID-Busaris, Guggi and Gavin Friday contributed a track to the sea shanty collection Rogue's Gallery, appearing in the track listing as Three Pruned Men.

Sparks - In Outer Space

Posted by Thurston in , ,

Sparks is an American rock and pop music band formed in Los Angeles in 1970 by brothers Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals), initially under the name Halfnelson. Best known for their quirky approach to song writing,[1] Sparks' music is often accompanied by cutting and acerbic lyrics,[2] and an idiosyncratic stage presence, typified in the contrast between Russell's wide-eyed hyperactive frontman antics and Ron's sedentary scowling.[3]

The band's long career has seen them successfully adopt many different musical genres; including glam pop, power pop, electronic dance music and mainstream pop. Despite these many styles, a recognizable "Sparks sound" remains throughout, and they have enjoyed a large cult following since their first releases.[4] Sparks have been highly influential on the development of popular music,[3] in particular on the late 1970s scene, when in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder, they reinvented themselves as an electronic pop duo, and abandoned the traditional rock band line up.[5] In contrast to the esteem in which they are held by such peers as Depeche Mode, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, who all cite Sparks as a major influence,[2][5] their almost constantly changing styles and unique visual presentations have sometimes seen them dismissed as a novelty act.[6]

The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their self-described "genre-defining opus",[7] and 2006's Hello Young Lovers (their 20th studio album) have brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and seen them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions.

Marianne Faithfull - A Childs Adventure

Posted by Thurston in

Where as "Broken English" was an angry, gut wrenching affair; "A Childs Adventure" is more somber and introspctive. The songs speak of a women who is coming to terms with herself and her place in the world. Now it's still a Marianne Faithfull album so I really couldn't call it a soft sound or relaxed. No this is Marianne faithfull, she who speaks of walking around "Times Square" with a pistol in her suitcase not really kniowing whats coming next but she's ready. There's a light reggea lilt to "Blue Millionare" and a sort of a Medievil sound to "Falling from Grace". This is one of Marianne's most autobiographical peices in telling of her well . . . fall from grace in the public eye. "Morning Comes" is one of the sweetest sounding songs I've had the pleasure of hearing her sing. It's a song full of hope, hope for daybreak and the light to shine on her. "Running For Our Lives" I do believe is one of Mariannes's best singles and is one of the standout tracks on this album.
The only reason I could'nt give this album 5 stars is that some of the keyboards haven't aged so good. Where "Broken English" still sounds fresh and cutting, sometimes the keys get a little out of hand or to smooth I should say. What keeps it gripping are the songs and Marianne herself who keeps you hanging on her every word.
If your just starting to delve into the rewarding works of Ms. Faithfull of course start with "Broken English", then "Strange Weather" for her chantuese side. After those two
try out her most recent album "Before the Poison" to here what she's up to now, you won't be dissappointed. After all that you really can't go wrong with any of her albums, for she's always evolving and changing her sound but always doing exactly what she should.
Now back to"A Childs Adventure". This was one of the last Marianne puchases I made and I don't know why I waited so long, probably because it's so hard to find anymore. Now that I have it it's like a missing piece of this terrific artist discovered. This is defintly worth the money to any true Faithfull fan. - From Amazon

NOTE: This video is NOT from the album in question, but it's pretty good just the same!

Marianne Faithfull - Dangerous Acquaintances

Posted by Thurston in

Dangerous Acquaintances is an 1981 album by British artist Marianne Faithfull. The work was seen by reviewers as a disappointing follow-up to Faithfull's Broken English, as the album trades the angry and controverse alternative new wave arrangements of the previous one for a more mainstream rock texture, using over a dozen session musicians and, for some, giving a certain anonymous feel to the songs. The main singles of the album were "Intrigue", penned by the singer's then-husband, Ben Brierley, and "For Beauty's Sake", written by Faithfull and Steve Winwood.

The Slits

Posted by Thurston in , ,

Sprung from the same UK punk scene as the Clash, the Slits are more often lumped in with all-female groups like Switzerland’s Liliput. It's a logical impulse, but the truth--as ever--is more complicated. For one thing, they weren't all female after Palmolive left to join the Raincoats and Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees) stepped in as drummer. Then there's the unclassifiable musical concoction reggae producer Dennis Bovell helped them create. It's punk, it's no wave, it's dub--and ultimately has more in common with the post-punk of PiL or the Pop Group. Met with critical accolades, Cut failed to ignite the charts and was their only recording for Island (they broke up two years later). This welcome reissue features revealing liner notes--in both senses of the word--and two bonus tracks, an off-kilter "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and an extended version of "Love Und Romance." --Kathleen C. Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry

Posted by Thurston in ,

Emerging alongside other goth bands such as Sisters Of Mercy, The Mission and The Cult, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry stood out as a different breed due to the directness of their lyrics. Formed in Leeds in 1982 they plowed a lone furrow with their dark and often manic rhythms - almost assaulting the audience with their force. The Indie hit singles 'Take It All', 'He's Read', 'This Today', 'Monkeys On Juice' and 'Hollow Eyes' are all included as well as 10 bonus tracks 'Beating My Head', 'I'm Still Waiting', 'Take It All', 'Happy' (Single Version), 'He's Read See The Fire', 'Monkey's On Juice', 'Push', 'Silence', 'Hollow Eyes' (12" Version) and 'Russia'. Cherry Red. 2005. - From Amazon

Not quite the 50's but...

Things were simpler in the 80's. Shave real close, wear a jumpsuit and sing about common stuff. Lacks compassion by today's standards - there's nothing to cry over. It was just kinda... fun.

“What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch Or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
